VIDEO RENTALS

The nebulous 1up.ca Arcade 2020 project features Video Rentals as one of the launch titles. The game serves as a throwback to one of the most important eras in modern history: the twilight of home video rentals during the new millennium.

Take a position as clerk at 24 Hour Video Rentals. You'll be tasked with renting videos to customers, restocking shelves, maintainance of the popcorn machine and of course, customers will want to know what movies you'd recommend!

Video Rentals features random customer interactions, challenge progression and a goal: reach or surpass level 12 with more than 150 Performance Points and soar to home video glory.

Strap on your neon pink bow tie and straddle your cash register, you are gonna rent a mass quantity of VHS tapes. There is a two tape limit per customer. You CANNOT let customers rent more than two tapes at a time and you can only check out one customer at a time. Your shift ends when you reach your quota.

 

The video rental store isn't too big, it's easy to find your way around the four main areas:

 

[Adult VHS] <-> [Classics VHS] <-> [New Releases VHS] <-> [Cash Register]

 

 

Press the blue arrow keys to zip back and forth across the floor of the video rental store. The customer will say what kind of VHS they want to watch and how many. You can't check customers out unless you have held exactly what they want on the counter marked HOLD.

DEVELOPMENT TIMELINE

March 2, 2020. 20 hour build, released Version 1 for review.

March 6, 2020. 20 hour refinement. Version 2 released for beta.

March 9, 2020. Version patched to 2a: Fixed bug where popcorn wasn't earning points, added shortcut back to cash register to all floor icons. Changed color of classics rack to help distinguish VHS tapes. No future scheduled updates.

This project is currently in beta.

 

 

If you have the right type/amount of VHS tapes on the counter, press the CASH REGISTER to check out. Know your VHS types:

 

VHS Classics (black tapes)

VHS New Releases (white tapes)

VHS Adult (red tapes)

 

Watch that POPCORN MACHINE! It's constantly failing. If someone wants free popcorn while they browse for movies, you'll likely have to press the POPCORN MACHINE to start it up.

 

 

Your Performance Rating (P) displays in the upper right. You lose -10 performance points for dumping your HOLDS and you lose -20 performance points for restocking the RETURNS while a customer is waiting. The game ends if you decrease to zero or lower, you'll have to turn in your bow tie.

 

Performance Points are earned:

+1 Serving popcorn

+2 Renting out any number of videos to a customer

 

 

 

Every shift ends when you reach a quota, and each shift quota increases by $5.

Winning the game means reaching or surpassing level 12 while earning +150 Performance Points.
